Hi, everyone. What is the age demographic as increased cannabis use the most in the last few years? You might be surprised to hear that it is our aging population over the age of 65. A very important question to address in terms of research is, why people over the age of 65 are increasingly turning to cannabis products? At this point, there is no research on the potential benefits or risks in this population, or barely little research. So all we can really do is speculate on the answer of this question. Personally, I think the answer is rooted in several of the modules we've previously covered, including the last two on inflammation and exercise. It turns out that inflammation, pain, and trouble sleeping all increase with age. A big part of aging in a healthy way is finding ways to counteract inflammation and pain. Regular exercise and sleep are essential for reducing inflammation, reducing pain, and protecting the brain. As you learned in previous modules and as covered in the National Cannabis Report, there's modest evidence that suggest that cannabinoids may be helpful for pain and sleep. As you learned in the last two modules, cannabinoids play an important role in inflammation and exercise recovery. If we connect the dots, it can makes sense to hypothesize that seniors might be using cannabis products to reduce pain, improve their sleep, and improve their ability to exercise and recover from exercise. In fact, we have a grand review to evaluate those hypotheses and equally important outcome to evaluate as what happens with all the other medications that seniors are taking. Some have hypothesized that the use of cannabis may reduce the polypharmacy effect that characterizes the trajectory of many seniors. In other words, the idea is that one cannabis product may replace multiple drugs used by seniors to reduce pain, improves sleep, etc. This is another hypothesis that we will be testing in our future research. As part of this module, we will explore different approaches to healthy aging and how cannabis may fit into that picture. Because there are no scientists who are truly experts in this area, we will also chat with a senior who's living here in Boulder, Colorado, as well as a couple of local physicians about their perspective on cannabis use in this population. To me, this is one of the most intriguing patterns in terms of the epidemiology of cannabis use. I think we will learn a lot by getting to the bottom of it. I hope you enjoy this module.
