Hi, good morning, Mrs. Schumes. >> Morning. >> I'm Peter and I'm the vet, and today I'll be taking care of our friend Copper here. So the receptionist told me that he hasn't been himself recently. >> No he hasn't. He's not very well at all. >> All right, have you noticed, he's just a bit dull, just not his usual level of activity? >> Yeah. >> So unfortunately the computer system isn't working today, so I'll have to get some basic information from you about Copper, then I'll take a more general history and ask you some questions so we can figure out what's been different. And then I'll do a physical examination so we'll have enough information to come up with a plan and see how you progress with Copper. >> Okay? >> Okay, so how old is he? >> He's ten. >> Right. And have you had him since he was a puppy? >> No, we rescued him from a rescue center when he was about a year old. >> And do you know anything about his history before that? >> Only that the rescue center picked him up from a police pound, where he was waiting to be put to sleep. >> So, you saved him? >> Yes, he's been saved. >> [LAUGH] >> I actually got my first dog when I was 11 years old. His name is Lucky and he was rescued. And I think he's the reason why I decided to become a vet. >> Yeah. >> And he's actually still alive. >> That's nice. >> So has he been castrated? >> Yes, yes, we did that fairly quickly because that's part of the terms and conditions when we adopted him. >> Right, good. And has he been vaccinated? >> Yes, yes, he has. >> When was he last vaccinated? >> Last June. >> Right, so he would be due in this June? >> That's right. >> Has he been wormed? >> Yes he has worming tablets which we give him every 3 months. So he had one last month, so it'll be two months. >> And did you get it from the clinic? >> Yes. >> Good. >> We got his tablets from the clinic. >> And has he been treated for ticks and fleas? >> Yes, he's treated for ticks and fleas and we apply that topically every month. And has he been out of the UK? >> No, no, he's only been in the UK. >> And do you have any other pets? >> No, we don't. >> And is he on any medication? >> No, he's not on any medication. >> Has he had any previous illnesses or anything? >> No, we've been fairly lucky with him. >> Right, good. [LAUGH] All right so that's it for the basic information about Copper. So now let's ask you some general questions about his history, and then we'll do a physical examination on Copper and then we should have enough information to progress from there. >> Okay. >> And see how we go. It's important to do some sign posting. So that's essentially telling the client what you're going to do and the order in which you're going to do it. Because sometimes you'll be asked in the history, and they'll be like, why is he doing the history? And why isn't he even looking at my dog? Why isn't he doing a physical examination? So it's good to tell the clients what you're going to do and when you're going to do it so they'll know what to expect.
