Now it's time for our students to see how much they've learned. Let's do this by reviewing a mock patient Anna. This is Anna Garcia is a 34-year-old Latina woman with advanced cervical cancer. Anna was 16 years old and a junior in high school when she became sexually active with her boyfriend, Julio. Within six months, she become pregnant and dropped out of school. Marco was born the following year. Anna obtained her high school diploma and began to create a home and life for her boyfriend and son. She worked in food service, housekeeping, and other minimum wage jobs. In her early 20s, with the help of her family, and attended a cosmetology program and has worked as a hairdresser ever since. Two years ago, and unnoticed heavier vaginal bleeding associated with fullness and heaviness in her lower abdomen. An evaluation in the emergency department revealed a mass on her cervix. She was referred to a cancer doctor. A large cervical cancer was found. She began radiation treatments followed by chemotherapy. The treatment was difficult for Anna to tolerate. Even though it took some time Anna rebounded and was able to go back to work. She was beginning to feel somewhat normal again. Well, one year later, Anna developed new low back pain over the course of three days. After numerous tests, it was found that her cancer had returned.
