Let me see how far if I can get- >> [CROSSTALK] >> You get a lollipop. >> [LAUGH] >> We hope it will challenge, engage, and reward you. >> I didn't know I was coming up here. [LAUGH] >> I was like, shit, there is Dan. Gather the instructors here from our last four courses. We've gathered our instructions here from the last four courses. We have Ben, myself, Emily, Dan, and Randy's joining us virtually. >> Hey, Randy. >> Hi, Randy. >> Hi, everybody from Cambridge. If you've completed courses one through four and are now ready to move on to the culminating project, you've accomplished a lot. Social and emotional learning programs have flourished in our schools during the last decade. And many states and local schools are now adding SEL curricula to student's academic experiences. These programs vary widely, but most share concern for five individual student competencies. Self-awareness, Self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and finally, responsible decision-making. Throughout this course, we have maintained that it is important for teachers and parents to know about and understand these programs. >> In our specialization, the teacher and social emotional learning, we have examined kindergarten through high school SEL programs, looking at both established programs and less well-known, community-based and youth empowerment approaches. >> Along with this examination of k through 12 SEL programs, we have underscored a missing, a much needed emphasis on the teacher's well being. We've explored existing programs for teacher's social and emotional learning as well as investigated promising but not widely practiced approaches. Here's a very skinny content outline. >> In this specialization, our central premise has been this. To facilitate students' social and emotional learning, a teacher must know the student as a person. This means the teachers must first strive to know him or herself. In order to help students achieve a degree of well-being, teachers need to be aware of their own well-being. >> And to encourage teacher self understanding and promote an informed view of free k through 12 SEL programs, we have introduced to you the prominent motions in both teaching and learning to understand better the emotional labor of teaching. >> You have examined a variety of k through 12 SEL programs, been introduced to the criteria by which they can be judged, and hopefully, come to an initial appraisal of which ones might work best for your students. >> You have explored the important features of community-based and youth empowerment approaches to social and emotional learning. Some of these approaches address the impact that social and political systems, such as immigration and structural racism on children's social and emotional experiences. >> We have examined some existing social and emotional learning programs for teachers. In comparison to K-12 SEL, only a few teacher programs exist. So we highlighted two professional development opportunities. You also explored the use of fiction and film to explore teachers' emotions as well as ways to connect teachers and students selves outside of school. >> In order to receive the Coursera Specialization Certificate, and if applicable, university credit for this MOOC, one of two culminating projects outlined below need to be satisfactorily completed. We describe them now and you can locate the culminating projects in written form in this course. >> The first option, the Teacher Implementation Plan, provides a pathway to explore and implement teacher and well-being programs for school settings. >> The second option, The Cinema, SEL, and the Classroom, provides participant and opportunity to illustrate their grasp and understanding of the most content as it applies to life like social and emotional depictions. >> And to offer their appraisal of the ways in which the issues of well-being are depicted and addressed. >> Whichever one you choose, we hope it will challenge, engage, and reward you. [MUSIC] >> What do? >> [LAUGH] >> [LAUGH] >> What up? >> Stop it. >> Yo. >> Come on. Give me a break. >> What do? I do not know. >> [LAUGH] >> What do? >> We're not going to make it through this one. >> Yes, we are. >> Come on. Come on, now.
