This week, we will start the second week lectures on the principle and the practice of self-reflection. The principle of the self-reflection can be easily understood if you directly practice reflection. You know your current status through self-reflection. Reflecting on your reality, situation and the causes of difficult problems, you can subtract the mind through subtraction methods. If you subtract the obstacles in your mind, your inner strength is naturally revealed. If your inner strength increases, you have the capability to overcome hard times, and you can achieve what you want. Many successful people have sincerely reflected on themselves. Those people have a high index of self-understanding intelligence. This self-understanding intelligence is also a part of inner strength. Self-reflection enhance the index of a self-understanding intelligence. I want to introduce our story broadcasted on EBS Korean TV about the index of self-understanding. The EBS program selected four successful people in different fields to find the common factor among them. They are a Musician, Ballerina, Designer and Surgeon. The program found that each person has several high scores in the indices of logic and the math intelligence, body and exercise intelligence, music intelligence, spatial intelligence, kinship in the nature intelligence, linguistic intelligence, self-understanding intelligence, and relationship intelligence. They had multiple intelligences depending on each talent. It is based on Multiple Intelligence Theory as introduced by Professor Yong-Lin Moon at Seoul National University in the TV program. Children also have their own incomparable ability and attitude. The most important thing is the common factor among successful people is a high score in the index of self-understanding intelligence. Now, why don't you check the index to see how much you understand yourself? As the index of self-understanding intelligence grows, the probability of success increase. If you practice self-reflection, you can understand yourself far more clearly. Self-reflection guides you toward the best not only of success, but also of happiness. And you can better understand the happiness you seek, you better understand when you are unhappy or happy, and what you need to do to be happy. The infinite inner strength, you originally had is revealed. So far, the illusionary self which you have thought was yourself has overshadowed your inner strength. By practicing self reflection, you can subtract the delusion and always be at rest. Your life graph is extremely useful in practicing self-reflection. When you do your life graph, you drew the graph according to your thoughts which were not so clear. Shall we explore ourselves some more? This will be interesting. See you next time. [FOREIGN] Yes, that is, so to speak, self-understanding intelligence and human-friendly intelligence. In the EBS TV program, they say, if your self-understanding level is high enough, it is likely to be successful. Is there any particular method to increase the level of self-understanding intelligence? Yes, there is. It doesn't actually require high philosophical approach to do it. Some people lack self-understanding, and for instance being obsessed with drawing even though he/she clearly doesn't have what it takes. No matter how much they try, it will be unlikely for them to deserve the recognition he/she hopes for. It's hard for anyone if the result goes against the expectation. If I can't get any compliments for what I've been trying, that causes the conflicts in one's mind. So self-understanding is practically discovering that talent of mine and connecting it to shared and common reality by other's recognition. Finding out my ability in the process is a very important point. What is it that I'm good at? If you think deeply into it, you remember things that received praise from other people. In many cases, people don't think they have certain specialties, but that's not true. Self-reflective way of thinking such as meditation can be the way to find it. Let's think about it. "What's my favorite color?" You could recall the summer season that makes you happy, and maybe draw the conclusion that it is green. In that way, you'll learn about yourself better and enhance the level of self-understanding that way. Especially in dating, after several times of rejection, you ended up thinking maybe I'm just not very likable and become devastated. However, you shouldn't stop there feeling rejected. By self-examining yourself and becoming open with your problems, you'll come up with answers by yourself. That means enhancing one's self-understanding level requires developing the ability to observe myself objectively as a third party. Some people are not aware of their temper, and blame others for not knowing their sincerity. When they observe themselves being temperamental on the videotape, they finally see that clearly as others will take it. Come to know that, we could understand about self-objectivity and that gives the idea of knowing where I stand at the present point. Knowing my current situation is the key to going forward; setting the right starting point gives you the ideas of how to fix the current situation, gives the room for the improvement. Historically, great men are those who grew up early in their age and not being indulged with their pride. Those who are being captivated with wild dreams are the ones with low self-understanding of themselves that lack self-examination. In that sense, the higher we get in the self-understanding level, the more likely it is to be successful. Okay, so when we meditate in a self-reflective way, it is important to observe ourselves objectively, as that being on the videotape. That's right, because when we see ourselves on the videotape it may not be how I look at myself. So-called intrapersonal intelligence, is like seeing myself in a mirror. As you accurately see yourself, you know your current status and that leads to success. There's a reason why Howard Gardner put intrapersonal intelligence on the base among the seven multi-intelligences. Thanks for telling your scholastic insight regarding the intersection among the morality, meditation, and humanistic education. Through the meditation we can objectively observe ourselves in a self-reflective way, and that helps us to have a matured and rational moral standard, which is the basic guideline in happiness. I'm an engineer, so from engineering point of view, there's a theory called 'resonance' in engineering. Those things on the inside come out and stimulate outside exactly the same way as it was on the inside. Which means, those who had an unhappy childhood, all that emotional baggage inside inevitably comes out and influences one's society just like the way the unhappy childhood was. In that respect, I tried the self-reflective meditation of KAIST for students. After a few times of practicing, the students seemed to know exactly what was inside their mind by themselves. Then, I told them how to discard all those minds. They follow the subtracting method and talked about what had been changed. So-called "discarding minds" and "emptying minds" can be thought to be dealt with in this method. How do you see this phenomenon? When we look closely into our thoughts, we can feel something heavy that weighs us down. It could be anger or resentment from the uncomfortable relationship with your enemy or even with your family. Sometimes, in order to resolve what's inside our minds, we should be able to target all those negative emotions and make peace with them in order to move forward and make progress. This can be explained as so-called "emptying our minds". Carrying anger and all that emotional baggage will prevent us from completely devoting ourselves in whatever jobs we have. I think it can be a great help to learn how to empty our heads from all those stressful conflicts by exercising meditation. Emptying ourselves sounds somewhat hard to accomplish, but it's not. Each and everyone carry their own baggage that has been a weight on their heart. It's impossible to take a step forward as carrying that all. We should shake off all those heaviness of minds. I guess the very gist is that we can shake off the heaviness in our emptying our minds, and as we practice meditation, it will give us inner strength that will help us to overcome to get through. All these negative emotions in our heads - hatred, anger, jealousy, sense of inferiority and resentment - limit ourselves to grow up and making progress. Thank you for your long interview. Above all, what we should remember is that, shake off the gravity that puts weights on your heart.
