[MUSIC] Hello, I am Professor Duck-Joo Lee. How was the last lecture? In the last two week, we looked at why we need to self-reflect and practiced reflecting upon ourselves. We also recognize the gap between what we want in the future and our current state. The gap was the preventing element. If we eliminate this barrier, we will be able to live the life we want. The lecture of the third and the fourth week contain the core content of the overall lecture. Please pay close attention to these lectures, then the others. We will start the third week's lectures with the fundamental questions of what the preventing elements are in disturbing us from going in the direction of what we want to fulfill. In the fourth week, we will practice dealing with preventing element in order to achieve our objectives. In the first lecture of the third week, we want to talk about what 'My mind' is. Before the lecture, I want to begin with the films. You will remember my explanations of The King's Speech and the Ghosts in the previous lectures. Some may think that course is on movies. You may remember the film Matrix. The brief storyline goes like this. Virtual reality in 1999. Humans that followed the matrix program were able to live their whole life in the virtual reality of the year 1999. During the program, the human brain was under control of AI, artificial intelligence. Everything that was seen and felt by humans was exposed to their search engine. Also, memories could be inserted and deleted at their will. Inside the virtual world, no human could recognize or distinguish the real world. Among them, there were some people who were awakened from the virtual reality. From outside the Matrix, they were able to insert the program via an optical cable, which would be used to find the heroes that were going to fight and save mankind. In the movie, the people's mind are only existed within the virtual reality of the Matrix and that they were trapped within a prison. To cut a long story short, the world that they were living in was a false and that the real world existed separately and they do not know of the real world. This is what I want to tell you. Now then, let us think of the world you live in. I will give you some simple examples. Let's make an assumption. After having an argument with your family, you are in a bad mood. In this state, you go out to meet your friend. In your mind, you will constantly be recalling the fight you have had with your family and feel frustrated, because they do not understand you. In this situation, do you think you can enjoy spending time with your friend despite the beautiful weather? You will probably continue to feel bad until this mind disappears. In the opposite case, if you are in good mood, the world will look beautiful. And despite the windy or rainy weather, you will continue to feel good, then, where are you living? Are you living in this world or are you living in a world inside of your mind? Do you understand that you are living inside your mind? You are not living in the real world, you are living in your mind world and that is your virtual reality. Here is another example. Now to study more about mind, you have to think about this. Is it your body or mind that is listening to this lecture now? Some may think it is the body and some may think it is the mind. There will be also be some people who think it is both the mind and the body. Right now, it is your mind that is looking at me not your eyes. If you think when you're looking at me with your eyes, then we can think about it like this. If I forcefully opened the eyes of a sleeping person with my fingers, can this person see my face? No, this person that is sleeping can only see his dream and therefore cannot see me. I hope this helps you understand the way you look with your mind, then what does the mind look like? It looks exactly like the world that you have seen with your eyes and smelt with your nose. You may think that your mind world is the same, as the real world. However, in your mind world, you have decided what is beautiful and what is not beautiful. The real world exist just as it is, but we constantly build another world inside our mind. In the second week, we recall the thought through themes and aging. You could picture your school and the playground. You had copied the real world into your mind and you have been living there. In other words, we have been making our world by copying the real world. The phrases are displayed in the Nobel Museum. The question was raised about 300 years ago, but it is still valid. Born originals, how comes it to pass that we die copies? By Edward Young. He says, we were born originals, but we have been copying the world while living. And therefore, as we'll die as a copy. What you can be certain of is that the things that are inside us are just copies. Although it is the same world, each person lives in a copied world, each individual have copied it differently. And therefore, thinks differently. To some, a certain event can be remembered strongly. While on the other hand, some may not even remember it. However, others may think or remember it in a completely different way. For those of you that do not understand, please do not hesitate to ask me. In the film Matrix, it mentions how one has "built a prison out of our past" and was "kept inside the prison that you cannot smell, taste or touch. A prison for your mind". In other words, we all live inside a copied world, a prison that was our mind. Can you act freely in a prison? Can you be happy? It is only natural that you can conflict with others, because everyone lives in their own differently copied world. This is why UNESCO constitution. "war begins in the mind" touches one's heart, once again. Then in the next class, we will look at how do philosophers look at this world. See you next time.
