Hello, Duck-Joo Lee, come back. In the last lecture, you saw the changes in brain waves after self-reflection. Actually, it is natural that brain waves change after meditation. The pictures that you guys bring, they're about 50,000 anguishes and thoughts. The brainwaves are complicated if the pictures are complicated, and it's clean if there are no pictures on EEG reflect as it is. These pictures exist from the moment I took them. But the more I think about them and the worry about them, the pictures increases. So, there is an old saying in Korean that, "Thinking leads to tail biting its tail." But how about we subtract out the pictures which are the cause of the problem, how will we be? Naturally, the brain waves become stable. Just by suppressing the arising thought, one can calm the brain waves for a while. But, self reflection fundamentally subtract the cause. Then, the same brain waves can come out whether I'm meditating or working. Before we talk about brain waves, I introduced the sports players who became free from stress through self-reflection meditation. They felt pressure for the game as well as burnout from the stress such as, fear of injury. And through meditation, they got to know themselves better, and they were able to solve fundamental human problems. Okay, in this last lecture of week five, I will introduce, a pilot. Pilots always look nice when they fly high up in the air, in their handsome uniforms. But, we are always curious about their inner mind as well. Lee In-Jae worked as an Air Force combat pilot since 1998. And now, he works for Korean Air which is a private airline company. Hello, nice to meet you. Please introduce yourself first. Yes, I am a Korean Air pilot, In-Jae Lee. As is my understanding, you flew combat flights for the Air Force and worked about 18 years as a pilot. Yes. We typically think pilots having a very strong mentality. My first question is what kind of stress does a pilot have? Yes, when I was in the Air Force. the aspect of dealing with weapons in a combat plane was for a single person only. But after I started to work for a public company, I had a big responsibility of keeping the passengers safe on the plane. Because my small mistakes can cause problems for airplane safety, my biggest stress is to strictly follow the rules and regulations. Because those rules and regulations are directly connected to passenger's safety and a safe flight, I need to stay alert and meticulously check everything so it becomes my stress. When I am in the cockpit, the instrument panel looks complicated. Dealing with this delicate machine requires a high level of concentration. And also, it is essential to have good judgement since the situation in the air can be unpredictable. Yes, humans are supposed to live on earth. But in the air, we are exposed to unknown situations so our perceptive ability is negatively impacted as well as doing addition and subtraction. In a normal situation, it shouldn't be a big problem but when an abnormal situation occurs, pilot can feel unstable and the subconscious can come out. So more than anything, for a pilot an important virtue is to have a calm mind and keep composure. In order to have composure, what kind of training do you guys go through? First of all, for basic flight training, there is a lot of repetition. We do simulation training to be prepared for unusual situations. In an actual situation many things can happen so during the abnormal situation, a pilot must keep mental composure in order to follow the training. I think the psychological calmness is important for pilots. I also studied a lot in the airplane simulator. We would appreciate if you can elaborate what you just told us. Sure, anyone can make mistakes. In my case, I keep thinking about my mistakes and say "I wont do it again." However, while I continuously think about my mistakes, I don't concentrate in that moment and repeat the same mistake. It's a vicious cycle. So shall we say that I now have the strength to dust off my past through the mind subtraction? I let go of the past and concentrate now in order to avoid the same mistake. In that aspect, meditation helps me a lot. Thank you for your good advice. It's true that one can't focus now if you dwell on the past which doesn't exist. For pilots who require a high level of concentration, meditation must be a big help. Yes, currently the airplane industry realizes that the psychological calmness is an important factor to aviation safety. The industry spends more attention to manage the stress and much research is available on how meditation can be beneficial. Each airline company has the medical facilities and psychologists to pay special attention to treat and help pilots stress management. So in the future, a meditation program will be a great help if airlines implement for the pilots. I think it will be a big help for the flight safety. These days, meditation help schools, corporation, and also our country. So, for pilots who require a high level of concentration, meditation certainly is required. Yes, that's right. Thank you for the wonderful interview. Thank you. Okay, we just heard the interview of a Korean pilot. It was a short interview, but he spoke on how much help it was to relieve stress and improve concentration by reflecting on himself. Especially, it is impressive to hear that he has a calmness and composure when facing dangerous situations. As I was speaking with him, a thought came to my mind. In order for a combat aircraft to fly to the highest altitude, what trajectory does it need to follow? Surprisingly, instead of going straight up, at one point it deliberately lowers its attitude. The goal to go fastest, is to lower the body to avoid resistance and rise up again. It is correct in theory and also in an actual fly. It looks like this, in a graph. Emergencies and the resistance, don't only happen while flying. What about our lives? If a hardship happens to me now, what can I do to overcome this crisis and improve more? I can take a step back and look back at myself. For those who can humbly accept himself, and empty his mind, even these crisis can be a platform for people jump. Where are you in your life? What kind of goals do you try to achieve? First of all, have some composure and have a time to look back. The time can be used to realize the gap between the current situation and my dreams. Next, through the mind subtraction method, you can eliminate the gap and before you realize it, you will have arrived at your goal point. I am certain that you already realized a lot about yourself by looking back until now. As I continuously tell you, this course is not a school course and has no exam, but I ask you for your commitment. Your commitment is great for you to be here in week five. I'm sure, that you may know clearly the reasons why to look back on you and why to subtract. Then, see you next week. Thank you.
