[MUSIC] Hello again. We are in week three working with your colleagues in school. And I'm going to take the lecture two, which is the role of teacher, unions and associations in developing relationships. Let's first of all, a look at teacher unions. What do what they are. It's a strong unified advocating body for teachers. In the, you know, the teacher unions legal, per legal entities that protect teacher rights, as well as advocate for teachers. The teacher union is comprised of professionals deeply interested in, and passionate about education. The strength is in their numbers and and the wealth of resources of the members. From where I come from, the Maldives we don't have teacher unions and such, however since 2008, the new constitution has allowed us to form teacher unions. We call our unions associations rather than unions, mainly with the same function, which is a legal entity but mainly working for the betterment of teachers. Not as well, in our case the teacher associations mainly a group of professionals working for the betterment of the teachers but not as strong as a union itself. So what I will be looking at is both teacher unions as well as associations interchangeably. So teacher unions or teacher associations will serve as a powerful force for change in our system. Providing support for civil rights and other social movements in, in our part of the world and in many other parts of the world. In recent years the teacher unions have broadened its scope of professionalism for teachers and educations to support professionals in addition to protecting the rights of the teachers. So why are teacher unions important? Why do we talk about teachers unions when talking about the relationships between teachers and other state boards? Because teachers unions are focused on advancing equity. The fight to protect teachers' rights, while they provide a platform for producing higher achieving students. The teacher unions help teachers to develop themselves and get better by sharing ideas, by sharing content, and by collaboration. In addition, they also protect the students as well as the teacher safety in schools. So teacher unions are important because it's it's a platform where teachers can develop themselves. Just look at this slide as an example of a teacher union. It's the mission statement of the American Federation of Teachers. Just think about some of the mission statements and try to see if this applies to your teacher unions or any other professional body that you might have. [MUSIC] One of the missions of the American Federation of Teachers is to improve the quality of the services that they provide and to bring all the members to assist and support one another. So this is one area that we had to build in, in our associations in, in our teacher unions as well. We have been as collective bodies especially in the Maldives, advocating for teacher rights from a social perspective, from, for village rights and all that. But now we should be moving forward and looking at improving the quality of services that we provide. We should be focusing ourselves on sharing knowledge. We should be focusing on collaboration between teachers. We should be creating a platform where teachers can learn from each other. We look at the unions as a platform for development. So this is where we have to go now. This is where we have to developing ourselves into teachers as professionals will have a voice in educational reform. Teacher unions will allow that platform for us. Teacher unions will allow us to become catalysts in educational reform. We should be able to provide collective advocacies for policy making. We should regulate that ourselves as well as we should influence the policy makers in regulating the teaching profession. In addition to those, teacher unions also provide a platform for sharing content cases and ideas which as I've mentioned before is lacking in our associations. With this global role and with new technologies, it's easier now to share content as well as ideas. in, in the Maldives, we have a lot of untrained teachers especially and mostly these trained, untrained teachers are in these first areas in the islands. However one of the advantages we have is that technology is available in almost all these islands. So if any teacher wants to share content and if it is done through teacher union or association, this is available. So we should be looking at ways in which we can share this content. We should be looking at ways where we can collaborate ourselves in providing quality education. One of the concerns we as teachers as well as the general public have is a quality education or the position of quality education And we know that we have a lot of quality teachers amongst ourselves. So why not share our ideas? Why not share our experiences with the less fortunate, the teachers who have lesser resources? Teacher unions can bring all the teachers, for example, a place like Maldives, it's very easy to bring all the teachers together into one platform. Talking about a couple of thousand teachers, if you can bring them together using, let's say a website or a web platform. We can share ideas, we can use our experienced teachers to develop lectures on using platform, share their views, ideas and even share their cases, contents with the teachers with lesser skills. So that we can have a platform to improve our teacher's our system as a whole. In the next session, we will be looking at the importance of trust in helping form positive school relationships. [MUSIC]
