I'm Eli Coleman and I'm the Director of the Program in Human Sexuality. We're part of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School. And I'm here to welcome you to this massive online open course in gender identity and the understanding of what it means to be transgender. This is an amazing opportunity for anyone to really learn from the best experts from across the country and around the world. And also I think it's so important to learn from transgender individuals themselves. I can talk to you about what it is to be transgender, but it is another thing to really hear from the individuals themselves, and that's where the real understanding and the real compassion really kind of comes from. And that is one of the ultimate goals of this course, is to really better understand and appreciate what it is to be trans in this culture or other cultures, and to develop this understanding of what it means to live that life. In that way, you can be a better professional working with other people and you can be a better ally for trans individuals wherever you work. So this is an exciting opportunity for anyone who is interested in lifelong learning and learning something new, and this is certainly a fascinating and complex but very important topic. So we welcome you to this course. We're very pleased. The program human sexuality has been involved in education, research, clinical care and advocacy for over 45 years. We have been treating transgender individuals since 1973. The University of Minnesota was one of the very first centers to do sex reassignment surgery. And very exciting recently, we have established a national center in gender spectrum health. So this is a wonderful product of the program Human Sexuality and through support from the Joycelyn Elders Chair in Sexual Health Education, we're able to offer this course to you. And through input from the directors of the National Center for Gender Spectrum Health. And also I want to acknowledge the wonderful help that we have received from one of our collaborating partners, Family Tree Clinic, who has helped us shape this course. So we've worked hard to really put together the best course available, the diversity of voices for you, and I think you'll find this to be a rich learning environment that will make a big difference in your lives but in everyone's lives that you touch. So welcome and thank you.
